Family history, genetics, and the risk for alcohol dependence
Alcohol dependence is a complex disease caused by many factors, including some that are beyond your control. One of the most important risk factors is genetics: you may have actually inherited, from one or both of your parents, risk factors for alcohol dependence. As a result, when some alcohol dependent individual's had their very first drink, there was an excessive release of pleasurable chemicals in the brain (such as "endorphins"). This excessive pleasure from drinking may result in an individual's becoming alcohol dependent.7
